A Word | POEM | Kids’ Poems and Stories With Michael Rosen

A Word I know a word that isn’t in the dictionary it’s a word that comes from my dad. It’s a word that came from his grandfather. It’s a word that I don’t really know what it means it’s a word my father says and he says he doesn’t really know what it means. All he knows is when to say it. What he knows is when his grandfather used to say it. His grandfather came from far away from a place he called Heim The word is shnobbregants my father says that his grandfather said it when there was a big pile of food on the table and everyone crowded round saying how nice it was and started to eat it Schnobbregants I can imagine that all the old relatives crowding around a table talking and laughing and my father is a small boy trying to get to the table too. Pushing past the old relatives and his grandfather says schnobbregance So when we have a big pile of food on the table and everyone crowds round saying how nice it is and starts to eat it my dad says schnobregance. One day someone said to me that gance means goose and schnobbre means beak and when he said that all the old relatives turned into geese at the edge of a forest next to a lake and they’re all flapping their wings and honking around the table and my father turns into a small boy trying to get to the table pushing past the geese. This poem comes from Jelly Boots Smelly Boots With wonderful pictures by David Tazzyman published by Bloomsbury
