Waris Shah wrote ‘Heer’. Ranjha used to graze
buffaloes for Heer’s family. He did this for 12 years.
Heer said, “I’m yours!” She would set out to meet Ranjha
taking a snack for him… ..one day, a maulvi (Muslim cleric)
was reading the Koran. Heer’s foot brushed him
as she went by. So the maulvi thought
I’ll take this up with Heer. How dare she disturb
me when I am reading the Koran! So when Heer was going back
that way… ..the maulvi confronted her. “Couldn’t you see that I was
immersed in praying to God… ..and you rudely brushed me,
as I was reading the Koran!” So Heer said, “Maulvi Sahab,
who were you remembering?” “God!” the maulvi said. “If that was true,
then how come you saw me?” “You should see only God!” “How did you even notice me
going by, while remembering God?” “I had eyes only for Ranjha!” “That’s why I saw neither
the Koran, nor you in my path!” “If you were praying you’d have
eyes only for God!” “I could only see Ranjha!” Heer says somewhere else,
“I set out in search of Ranjha” “But I didn’t find him”I set out in search of Ranjha
But I didn’t find RanjhaI found God, not RanjhaGod’s no match for my Ranjha!Yes, that’s what she says!
I found God himself, but not Ranjha But God wasn’t a patch on him!
