Gateway Expressions Student Art and Poetry Contest

THAT’S GOOD. REALLY?
YES. MY NAME IS SADIE HENDERSON, AND
I GO TO RIVERGOLD ELEMENTARY, AND–AND THIS IS MY PICTURE. I PAINTED IT. I GOT FIRST PLACE. WELL, IT’S CELEBRATING
THE 100 YEARS OF PARK SERVICE, AND I MADE HALF DOME
RIGHT THERE. SHAUNA POTOCKY, VOICE-OVER:
TODAY IS A REALLY EXCITING DAY BECAUSE WE’RE CELEBRATING
THE OPENING EXHIBIT OF GATEWAY EXPRESSIONS
STUDENT ART AND POETRY CONTEST IN THE ANSEL ADAMS GALLERY
HERE IN YOSEMITE VALLEY IN YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, AND GATEWAY EXPRESSIONS
STUDENT ART AND POETRY CONTEST IS OPEN TO ALL
THE GATEWAY COMMUNITY YOUTH, SCHOOL DISTRICTS
THAT SURROUND THE PARK. [APPLAUSE] THE REASON WHY THE PROGRAM
IS IMPORTANT IS THAT WE WANT TO GIVE YOUTH A VOICE
OF CREATIVE EXPRESSION TO TELL US ABOUT
WHAT’S IMPORTANT ABOUT YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK– WHAT DO THEY CONNECT TO; WHAT MEMORIES DO THEY FOSTER; WHAT, UH, WILDLIFE
DO THEY CARE ABOUT; UH, WHAT’S THEIR EXPERIENCE– AND THROUGH THEIR OWN ARTWORK,
POETRY, AND PHOTOGRAPHY, THEY CAN TELL US THAT. MY PAINTING IS A FLOWER
CALLED THE COLUMBINE. IT’S RED, AND IT’S YELLOW, AND…IT’S GORGEOUS. POTOCKY: WE KNOW THAT SOMETIMES
THE ART PROGRAMS ARE CUT IN A LOT OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS,
AND THIS MAKES IT REALLY EASY TO ADD ART BACK INTO
THE CLASSROOM AND THEN GIVE IT
A REALLY REMARKABLE PLACE TO BE SHOWCASED– THE ANSEL ADAMS GALLERY
IN YOSEMITE VALLEY.
