Happy Women’s Equality Day!

[MUSIC PLAYING] It seems like women are
taking over the world. Doesn’t it seem like it? [APPLAUSE] We have to support each other,
especially at this time. Be proud of women, and whatever
your choice is in life. It’s up to us what makes
us happy and fulfilled. [APPLAUSE] We are moving forward. Change is happening. I’m a fencer. I’ll be the first Muslim
woman to represent Team USA while wearing the hijab. [APPLAUSE] Once a woman gives up financial
independence, to a mate it’s over. Yeah. So if you’re smart, you
teach your daughters, teach your
granddaughters, everybody has to have something
that they’re good at where they can earn a living. It’s really important
to encourage each other, encourage other
women, to stand up, and be strong, and know
that we will be OK, and we have each other’s backs. I mean, women have more to think
about than makeup and handbags. We’re busy running companies,
and raising families, and trying to become the next
president of the United States. [APPLAUSE] There’s a really beautiful
moment happening with groups, with women coming together. There’s power in numbers. And there’s power collectively. This is what Oprah said when she
was asked what gives her hope. Yara Shahidi, of course. I hope I’m still around when she
becomes president of the United States. That is going to happen,
if she wants it to happen. [APPLAUSE] Wow. You’re bombarded
with horrible things going on all the time in every
area, not just anti-just-gay. It’s just– it’s everything. And I think sometimes we
just keep our heads down. And we just keep trying
to do what we can. And the other issue, too, is we
have such little representation in the media. I get criticized for a lot of
things just for being who I am and speaking out for equality. I think it’s so important that
our stories are not erased. I think a lot of us right now in
this current political climate are feeling more vulnerable
than ever before. But I think the
beautiful thing about it is that we are having events
like the GLSEN Awards or women running for office where
we’re all coming together. We’re realizing that if
anybody is vulnerable, we’re all vulnerable. [APPLAUSE] So we really have to
look out for each other. Women stand up for themselves. They fight their own battles. And women can win. With every step that
I’ve taken in my career, I’ve been fearless. With love, I’ve been fearless. With my voice, and
activism, and using my body to change an industry,
I’ve been fearless. Politically,
whatever you believe, I feel like it’s a real
moment of reckoning for women, that we have sort
of collectively carried this burden for so long. And it’s time to share it. Yeah. And let it– [APPLAUSE]

  4. Is equality day similar to international women's Day, or is it something different? It would be nice if they spoke more about the specific issues they care most about at some point (perhaps they do and this is just a shortened version). I'm not sure if inviting political types onto the show for this day will send the same message to everyone, but I like how Ellen uses her influence to try to help people.

  29. Dont wanna break your equality-celebration mood, but true strenght don't need demonstration. Or approval. Or support. If you must say, that you are equal, it means, that you are not. If you must prove, that you are important, it means, that you are not. Whoops, sorry XD

No man wants his wife to overpower him.
Just like no woman wants her husband to be more good looking than her.
