Liszt's Symphonic Poems were monumental in that they were not only groundbreaking in their day but also deeply influenced Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens, Dvorak, Debussy, Sibelius, and countless others. This presentation offers beautiful paintings to accompany these great works, however, Árpád Joó is unfortunately not the best interpreter of Liszt's works. Kurt Masur, Georg Solti, James Conlon, and Karajan do a much better job with various pieces. However, anything that promotes Liszt, who has been unjustly marginalized, deserves a thumbs up!
Thank you for posting the cycle complete. I really believe that these performances by Arpad Joo are overall the best of any complete set. Along with the ones on "original instruments" conducted by Martin Haselböck, they make a great case for these fascinating and underappreciated pieces. 🙂
I GET HIGHLY PISSED OFF WHEN LISTENING TO MUSIC AND A DAMNED POLITICAL AD INTERRUPTS . A POX ON ALL THEIR HOUSES !
I wonder if these works influenced Wagner.
