Sayani Gupta: Unblushed

One sneeze is coming and not coming. We don’t even require how much acting you
know, all you have to wear is a bikini and look nice. She’s a muslim woman, how can she smoke? You want to run away, I am going to help you run away. Hmm. How do we know that youre not a lesbian, I
was like that’s not for you to know. I am flat chested, so what? Hey Quite! Pretty women wonder where my secret lies
I’m not cute or built to suit a model’s fashion size, but when I start to tell them, they
think I am telling lies. I say they are in the reach of my arms, span
of my hips and the stride of my step, curl of my lips. I am a woman, phenominally a phenominal woman. That’s me. I walk into a room just as cool as you please,
and to a man to fellow stand or fall down on their knees, then they swarm around me,
like a hive of honey bees. I say it’s the fire in my eyes, the flash
of my teeth, the swing of my waist, and the joy in my feet. I am a woman, phenominally, a phenominal woman. That’s me. It has a humungous legacy, it has a lot of history, a lot of character, a lot of magic, it has a lot of madness and everyone who has come out of that space is completely crazy I lied to my mother saying I joined the editing
course, cause I knew she’s not going to.. She actually told me that if I came here,
that she’d commit sucide. I obviously didn’t have the heart to tell
her that I’m going to a film school to learn acting. So I told her no no I’m going to edit, with
no clue what editing was. Who goes to study films? Everytime I’ve played a character like that,
I’ve come out stronger, Thankfully, all the women I’ve been able
to play till now have been really solid yaar. Actually playing Khanum, who is one, Muslim and I’m sorry I’m going back to that but has a context. Someone who is visually impaired, to sombody who is also a lesbian and who is not in the closet I actually got the opportiunity to meet such brilliant people, who do not sit
and dwell in self pity, who don’t feel victimized. Who have made their weakness their strengths, just meeting these it sort of opened my eyes. We live in a country where article 377 is
still existent, where homosexuality, is a criminal offence. Which is something that is probably beyond our understanding. How can someone come into your bedroom and
tell you who to love. I also heard, oh shonali is bi-sexual, maybe
that’s why you got the film. things like that… But these are the things you laugh at and
ignore completely because they are really bizzare and stupid. And actually I have been told my a director,
We don’t even require how much acting you know, all you have to do is wear is a bikini
and look nice. But I was like, I’m sorry, I don’t want to . This girl and her mother, and we started talking, she was like what do you do, were in films, so she got really excited. And I asked what do you do, she said nothing, I’ve done my MD. So I said you’ re a doctor.where do you
practise? Do you have a clinic, are you associated with
a nursing home. She was like noo, I’ve just been sitting at home, my parents have been looking out for a guy past 4-5 years. So I said you’re a doctor waiting at home
for your parents to look out a guy for you. She said Yeah, but what to do I am a girl na So the mother had slept by then, so I was
like listen do you want to run away? I am going to help you run away. She was like no no no no, My parents have
been supportive, they atleast let me study till what I wanted to and they are not forcing
me to marry a guy that I don’t want to marry. Atleast I have the choice to choose the guy
I’m going to marry. So to her it is really a choice, but what
is the choice? It doesn’t matter the kind of life you have
been given, because we are born into families, born into socities, born into cultures,
but I guess the choice lies in our hands, to decide how much we want to do with it. I’m not saying it’ll come easy, but you know,
you might have to rebel, might have to go out of the way,
make other people realise that your freedom is as important as their freedom
And every choice that I make, good, bad ugly, I am responsible for them. And the choices that we make comes from information from how much we read and how much we want to know. We don’t have idols anymore right,
the youth is watching roadies and that’s where they want to go, the cant be the only aspiration and as young women, I feel we need to realize that this choice lies in our hands. but that can only come with education I feel. Empowerment is definitely not trying to be someone else. You know, we have to take a step back, realise
we need a sense of humour To look at things, it is ok to laugh at sexist jokes. It is ok to say I am flat chested, so what! I have humungous assests, so what! I think what is beautiful is our uniqueness. That’s really my idea of empowerment. Its like to just be chill. Now you understand just why my head is
not bowed. I don’t shout or jump about or have to talk
real loud. When you see me passing, it ought to make
you proud. I say, its in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair, the palm of my hand,
the need for my care, Cause I am a woman. Phenominally, a phenominal Woman. That’s me!

  7. I think this is much better than the Radhika Apte's message because it focuses more on your personhood and your liberty as a woman than it does on thinking that you are beautiful. I know it comes from a good place, but i wish the focus wasn't on "you are beautiful", Instead, i wish it was, "it doesn't matter what you look like because there are more important things about you", and this one really did the job.
