  1. The statue of liberty has nothing to do with immigration. It was given as a gift by the French to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the U.S. The poem titled “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus was added 17 years later in 1903 and is just that – a poem that is about the freedom to succeed. Welfare and other “benefits” did not exist at that time. Immigrants survived or failed based on their own merit. The immigration act of 1903 allowed the deportation of immigrants who became a public charge within their first two years in the country. Bottom line is that those that will be a burden on our already taxed and straining infrastructure are not welcome. The U.S does not need any more leeches – we have enough of our own.

  2. The poem, much like the Plege of Allegiance, are just that….poems and should not be used as points of reference to any settled immigration policy or indeed mandatory requirement of the Constitution. The Founders did NOT erect the Statue of Liberty as any symbol of what the USA was meant to be, it was a gift symbolizing the shared defeat of Monarchical rule and had NOTHING TO DO with immigration until Emma Lazurus's misleading poem was placed on that at plaque. It never should have been approved to go on there since the message was so easily misconstrued. Jeez, when are you people in local news going to STOP passing on misinformation? And Mr. Cuccinelli is correct what he says. I have my ancestors papers from Ellis Island and it did ask who sponsored their passage, where they were going and how much money they had and whether they were able to be self sufficient, as in did they have a trade and could work. Go to ancestry and you can get access to ALL and any documents available. I did, that's why I know the truth of this stupid argument. Also, there was a time people were too proud to take charity, that's changed with the new immigrant who every day is waiting in SS and Social services offices or in emergency rooms or the County General. And don't say it's not true.
