The Egg – A Short Story

You were on your way home when you died. It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, …but fatal nonetheless. It was a painless death. The medics tried their best to save you, …but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered, …you were better off, trust me. And that’s when you met me. “What happened?” “Where am I?” “You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words. “There was… there was a truck… …and it was skidding.” “Yes.” “I…” “I… I died?” “Yes.” “But don’t feel bad about it.” “Everyone dies.” You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” “Is this the afterlife?” “More or less.” “Are you God?” “Yes, I’m God.” “My kids, my wife…” “What about them?” “Will they be all right?” “That’s what I like to see,” I said, “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s good stuff right there.” You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn’t look like God. I just looked like some man or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. “Don’t worry,” I said, “They’ll be fine.” “Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn’t have time to grow contemptuous of you. Your wife will cry on the outside, …but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, …she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.” “Oh… So, what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?” “Neither, you’ll be reincarnated.” “Ah,” “…so the Hindus were right.” “All religions are right in their own way. Walk with me.” You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?” “Nowhere in particular. It’s just nice to walk while we talk.” “So, what’s the point then? When I get reborn, …I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A baby. So, all my experiences and everything, …everything I did in this life, won’t matter?” “Not so. You have, within you, all the knowledge
and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.” I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful
and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain
a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass
of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, …and when you bring it back out, …you’ve gained all the experiences it had. You’ve been in a human for the last 48 years, …so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.” “How many times have I been reincarnated then?” “Oh, lots. Lots and lots, …and into lots of different lives. This time around, …you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 A.D.” “Wait, what?” You’re sending me back in time?” “Well, I guess technically. Time as you know it only exists in your universe. Things are different where I come from.” “Where… where you come from?” “Oh sure, I come from somewhere, somewhere else. And there are others like me. I know you’ll want to know what it’s like there, …but honestly you wouldn’t understand.” “Oh…” you said, a little let down. “But wait. If I get reincarnated to other places in time, …I could have interacted with myself at some point.” “Sure, happens all the time. And with both lives only aware of their own lifespan, …you don’t even know it’s happening.” “So, what’s the point of it all?” I looked you in the eye. “The meaning of life, …the reason I made this whole universe, …is for you to mature.” “You mean mankind, you want us to mature?” “No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature, …and become a larger and greater intellect.” “Just me? What about everyone else?” “There is no one else. In this universe, there’s just you and me.” You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on Earth?” “All you. Different incarnations of you.” “Wait, I’m… …everyone?” “Now you’re getting it.” “I’m every human being who ever lived?” “Or who will ever live, yes.” “I’m Abraham Lincoln?” “And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too.” “I’m Hitler?” …you said, appalled. “And you’re the millions he killed.” “I’m Jesus?” “And you’re everyone who followed him.” You fell silent. “Every time you victimised someone, …you were victimising yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, …you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment
ever experienced by any human …was or will be experienced by you.” You thought for a long time. “Why? Why do all this?” “Because someday, you will become like me. Because that’s what you are. You’re one of my kind. You’re my child!” “Wow!,” you said, incredulous. “You mean, I’m a god!?” “No, not yet. You’re a fetus, You’re still growing. Once you’ve lived every human life throughout all time, …you will have grown enough to be born.” “So, the whole universe… It’s just…” “An egg!”, I answered. “Now it’s time for you to move on to your next life.” And I sent you on your way.

  1. A Big Thanks to Andy Weir for allowing us to use his story!
If you want to support us, please check out those beautiful Egg posters we made:

  2. Dear God, I hope it's true, but who's jezus then? And how jews created their religion, is it a lie?

  3. No proof and some will believe but having a religion with very strong proof and many will hesitate.
Islam is the only religion having script from the creator of everything which explains all this questions without any conflict.

  4. So your saying there’s a chance my crush is myself? Wow im so selfish i love myself then.

  5. Doesn't this kind of cheapens life? I mean, it's fine and the egg is acceptable even if it's only for me, but why must everyone else be me? Won't it be better not for me to help my other selves, but for compassion to actually exist? Won't it be better if I would've helped billions of people who were not me in any way? And also, I would not be able to live with myself knowing I could create that much harm and evil. It's just against everything I as my current self stand for

  6. If I get top comment we all get top comment !! <3

(Yes this is what I got from this video)

  7. Imagine how many times God had to explain that story to me. After every death I come to him like "Huh I died?" and he is like
"Ah shit, here we go again"

  8. This is like the saying, "treat yourself how you would want to be treated," but intensified

  9. Interesting theory but how is the beginning and the end of the cycle of humanity defined and what about all the other animals and cellular organisms that are present in the universe?

  10. This is why babies stare at you! They are young enough to remember past life’s and are just like “woah why am I here!”

  11. Isnt this a story related from Brandon Sanderson? he wrote something very similar in a chapter of Radiant Words (Stormlight Archive Saga), remind me of that

  12. What if i'm on my last life, the life just before being like the current god. what if my intilect and thoughts were all from previouse lives. you could be the last life but you are me at the same time. what if my strive to creat anything like god was from me being closer to being the next god. what if god made this video as a messege to us or me telling us that we will all or i will be the next god the next creater the next one to have everlasting power. just think about it, if fate is truly real and the current god truly exists then there has to be a reason for all of us or me to see this video.🤔😣😲🙄(also is this re:zero but with god)

  13. Wait a minute

What if i am that God i talked too but just a different reincarnation

so is there only me in this multiverse or nah

  14. tu eres yo en esta vida y yo soy tu pero en aquella

you are me in this life and i am you but in that

  15. I watched this after eating edibles and it’s legitimately changed me… tier channel

  16. So, all of you in the comments aren't real and god had a person post this to send me a message?

  17. I’ve heard this exact same story on a Logic album, anyone else? I have a feeling logic just jacked wherever this story originated from. He does it with all of his music (stealing beats/flows).

  18. I've never unliked at Kurzgesagt video before, but I guess there's a first time for everything. I'm probably going to get downvoted to hell, but I'm going to come out and say it. This video was dumb. It's just a bunch of pseudo-philosophical, untestable, unfalsifiable hokum. They're fantasies that sound deep and reduces peoples' anxiety about dying and not existing one day. It's the same hokum that all religions spout, but I thought this was supposed to be a science channel.

  19. If I didn't have a religion, I think I'd believe in this one.

Excellent animation & narration to an amazing story. Good job guys

  20. Yes but not only human lives and not only planet earth 🤗😂🤣😂😘😀😍 love and light God bless ALL NAMASTE.

  21. What a bunch of bullshit. There is no God. People, stop procreating. Life is a farce and slavery.

  22. You're the one who created this video and if like this comment you're liking your own comment

  23. This closely overlaps with Hindu concept of "Advaitha" which means one or infinity ……. Everyone is god

  24. 3:19 Wonder how many talks “God” had with the person.
It’s the same talk or more an after action report after each life…

  25. This is depressing to think about. When I die I want to die. Not return. Never liked the egg short story. An entire universe made out of torturing one person is a bit harsh.
But the animation and voice acting in this is good tho.
