Wim Hof Method on Auto-Immune Disease | Science Research Results

Our immune systems are beautifully complicated. They’ve evolved through our entire evolutionary history to be as robust as possible in the war against bacteria, viruses, and other forms of pathogens. When our immune system comes into contact with a pathogen it triggers an inflammatory response. An alarm to excite and draw in more immune cells, to ramp production of useful proteins and to fight off the invader. For the most part this makes inflammation useful. It helps coordinate and rid our bodies of unwanted guests effectively. Now let’s say one day the immune system gets confused: “Jeez I don’t understand what this stuff is?” “Hey Clancy, get over here!” “Hey what’s up?” “Look at this? What do you think this is?” “Aww Mikey that looks like a pile of garbage to me.” “Get rid of it. ASAP, Pronto, Right now.” “Wait, you sure? It kinda looks like the stuff we use for bones and cartilage and stuff” “I mean, It would be a really bad idea, you know?” ”I don’t care Mikey, I’m just doing my job. You dump all that that right now!” “Hmm, ok I guess your right…” “Ok fellas, let’s get to it!” [Whisper] This is what causes Arthritis. This is known as an autoimmune disease. It’s when the immune system confuses something natural in the body as an invader. Then attacks and attempts to destroy it. In the case of Rheumatoid Arthritis the immune system attacks joints. This causes inflammation around those perfectly useful joints, mobilizing and activating more immune cells. Causing more harm. It is why in most cases of autoimmune disease, the medication and aim is to suppress this unwanted activation of the immune system. Diabetes, MS, Psoriasis are all forms of autoimmune disease, the list, it goes on! This is where the Wim Hof Method comes in. Someone suffering from chronic inflammation can use the method to manage this unwanted inflammation and suppress an overactive immune system. This was conclusively shown with the radboud study, But! Even more recently, with a new study attempting to integrate the Wim Hof Method as an add-on therapy for people already suffering from an autoimmune disease. Axial spondyloarthritis. Ok so we need more background on this: “Ok time to bring in the bones” “No, not those bones..” “Yeah. there we go, thank you.” This is your spine. It’s very useful for lots of things, Like standing. And not dying. This is your pelvis, it’s very useful for lots of things, like sitting. And also not dying (again). Axial Spondyloarthritis affects the spine and these joints here. The sacroiliac joints. When the immune system attacks these areas it produces inflammation. This study had Wim Hof teach his method as a management therapy to participants with this autoimmune disease. To help them manage their inflammation and pain and to measure its effectiveness. But how to measure the effectiveness of the Wim Hof Method? It would have to be an observable improvement in inflammation. But then… How do we measure inflammation? With blood. Harmless, easy to hold, medically standard samples of blood. Now imagine a rack of blood samples: To the naked eye it looks like: BLOOD Our eyes are useless! So throw them in the garbage. Instead we need special equipment to see what the blood is made from. With this we will be able to detect the many proteins and cells floating in the blood. Some of these proteins are clear signs of inflammation. Proteins such as C-reactive protein and Calprotectin. C-reactive protein is a beautiful pentagonal looking protein excreted by the liver when the immune system is inflamed. Which makes it a reliable biomarker when measuring inflammation. Especially in the case of axial spondyloarthritis. The more C-reactive protein, the more inflammation, typically. We also have Calprotectin. It doesn’t have a nice shape like a pentagon and looks more like someone dropped a bowl of spaghetti. But still, it is a useful bowl of spaghetti when measuring inflammation. Using a sample of blood and finding all these proteins can help us accurately estimate the inflammation a person could be experiencing. We take for instance C-reactive protein and observe how many milligrams is present per liter of blood. If that number rises we can clearly see that there is more inflammation. But the study is aimed to lower these proteins. To provide an alternative to people already suffering from axial spondyloarthritis to manage their inflammation and pain. The question is: Did it work? For 8 weeks a participant would perform the method mostly by themselves sometimes in groups. Undertaking a regiment of cold showers, the WHM breathing and meditation. A sample of blood was collected before the training and then compared to a sample taken after the training, on the 8th week. And the result was… well… It was powerful! C-reactive protein was significantly lower. And this was very important because it was the primary inflammatory indicator used by the study. Calprotectin was also lower. These inflammatory markers were successfully lowered! Along side this, a series of questionnaires and surveys were tracking the progress of the participants. 2 specifically for their axial spondyloarthritis and a few for general health and quality of life. The great news is, that they all showed improvement. So both the bio markers of inflammation like CRP and caprotectin reduced and the general reported health of the participants improved! This is wonderful news! This was all done in comparison to a control group that did not commit to the method. All of their scores remained basically the same. To wrap up… This study was unique in that it gave people already suffering from a mild form of axial spondyloarthritis the ability to manage it. Manage it using the method with real measurable results. There’s obviously something poetic here to be said about being in control and not letting the disease control you. Taking your life in your own hands to the best of your ability, despite its shortcomings. And turning it into something beautiful. For yourself, and for others. Happy, strong, and Healthy.   4. so i have a dust allergy. An allergy is basically a confused immunsystem that attacks dust particles, right. So if taking showers strengthens the immunsystem doesn't that mean that my allergy will get worse ?
    i got the allergy because i took cold showers in the first place. But i had a lot of stress as well. Maybe the combination of these 2 was the trigger.
    i need some clarity, please.

  6. I got something strange 3 weeks ago.

    First I've practiced the Wim Hof methode for almost over a year.

    Then I stopped and only left the daily cold showers.

    3 weeks ago I got 4 days of migraine in a row. Had no additional stress or a cause for the migraine.
    It was awful. I thought while laying there I shall try the breathing exercises. Perhaps the dopamine etc will balance something up there.
    The migraine stopped a few minutes after the exercise, but then 6 days of heavy cold. I kept breathing cause it helped my sinusus to stay open.

    Just wanted to share it, because it's wierd ain't it?

    Today I practice cold showers and 2 sets of breathing in the morning everyday. I forgot how great the mental clarity is after the breathing. Anyway I love the cold.

  11. I doubt that any number of cold showers and chi generation excercises could ameliorate leaky gut syndrome which is arguably the root cause of all autoimmune disorders and diseases. All grains, sugar, and other anti-nutrients such as oxylate, lectin, etc. are the inflammation inducing defences of plants. Plants bite back! When we eat a chicken, it is dead (except maybe for Wim 😉) and it's defences are deactivated. I doubt that any human is allergic or intolerant to bone broth or a roast. But for plant, their defences are very much alive when we eat them especially when raw. But there's more to this. Plants also want to lure us into doing their bidding. The marijuana plant says: Hi! Let's be friendssss. I'll give you altered states of consciousnessss, which you will really like. All I asssk in return is that you, well, just look after me. Here, have just a little. It's free.

  15. I just can't do the ice baths. I'm allergic to the cold and I start getting urticaria and breathing problems. Can I just do the meditation and breathing parts? Please I'm desperate for a cure and don't ever want to resort to inhalers for this sudden condition I've contracted.

  17. Guys, just so you know, wim hof method is great and all but if ure lazy… only breathing properly and meditating, doing physical exercise often can do these things aswell, besides diet like eating low carb and low fibre but that is individual depending on micro biome and stuff

  21. I believe I've personally experienced great benefits from the WHM, though I'm healthy. It's worth noting that the study only noted decreases in ESR and CRP, both of which are notoriously unreliable in the clinical setting and not well-correlated with patient outcomes. It's preliminary research, and, while promising, doesn't prove anything yet. That said, I'm confident the WHM will be further validated scientifically, based purely on my own anecdotal experience.

  25. 1) What is the source, verifiable reference of your method ? Have he published in a journal about it. Ask him to give references.
    2) is there a proof or evidence of that statement? Is it valid proof?
    3) are there any past solid proof for what the method says?
    4) has anyone done studies on that method to be a truth or fact ? What kind of study done? Is that study valid ? Did they apply vigorous statistics and math to conclude?
    5) is there a bias in the statement ?
    6) is the statement true and accepted by many or all? Or just one man’s opinion taken as fact/truth?
    7) is that statement a belief or idea or hypothesis only and that it is pseudoscience?
    8)is it just persons personal opinion and not a fact or truth?

  27. Hello: Question: After 8 weeks, the inflammation markers were lower. If went it went on longer, would the body be trained enough that the issue would dissipate? Not saying that this process is a cure.

  28. I think the beneficial effect is mainly to meditation. Mindfulness meditation has been proven to lessen inflammation, reduce anxiety and decrease cortisol levels, among many benefits. A more rational approach would have been to have a group doing meditation alone, another breathing alone, another cold showers, and then some groups doing combination of those therapies, with a control group doing nothing. Otherwise, you cannot conclude that the results are better than meditation alone. Also there is the placebo effect, the body-mind connection. The fact that you are working on your health every day, whatever you are doing, certainly has a positive stimuli on your entire health and well being.

  31. Wim, what about people with very low adrenals? Your technique does not seem to benefit people with very low adrenals. It makes them feel more fatigue using the breathing and cold water. Any response to this?

  32. Spending £170 on desire feels good…Can't justify that money for 10 week course taking cold showers & deep breathing. Love the incentive but don't waste money on the course. I believe in enhancement but how can you justify that price?

    Cleansing breaths were always my go to method for pain control in all my patients, in 40 years of nursing. Learned it in school, back in the dark ages from a nursing instructor not a book. Have used it all my life, and can't remember taking narcotics, even after 4 surgeries.
    We are shallow breathers when anxious or stressed, and so the dramatic increase in anti anxiety and narcotic analgesics. But, now retired
    Most friends or family prefer the pills than natural breaths and relaxation. Sad.

  35. dude, i think you are great and all that, but , i read that paper that you have in link under the video…all together 24 people participated, CRP went down from 3.1 to 2.6 if i am not mistaken…that is just not enough for real reasrch. I that period of time CRP can drop from various reasons, varied from temperature, humidity etc…

    Also, cold water helps wake up the body.

  44. Neither the video or the blog post state as clearly as I would like, the actual levels of improvements. Actually I can’t really see them anywhere. So it really makes this void because it’s not clear how much it was able to help. Also I’d be curious what the longer term effects of this would be on people that have compromised immune systems … regardless I’m sure it’s useful, but if someone actually has a real issue and is looking for real solutions this video and blog post only hit at possibilities and not valid options.

  46. I’m not medically trained but I just wanted to ask could there be a possibility that the body has naturally repaired itself to some degree overtime without the Wim Hoff method? Ie Autophgy …or has the study monitored a good number of test subjects? I don’t doubt the breathing and cold showers etc just curious from a science perspective.

  50. The WHM will not only improve your physical health, but also your mental health. You have to discipline yourself to keep taking cold showers/ice baths and overcome the cold shock.
    Once you've learned this 'discipline skill' you will take it into your daily life, in other situations.
    In my case the WHM has had many positive impacts on my life in many aspects.

I’ve felt crappy in and off for years, had every test under the sun kind of and multiple times too, eventually after feeling strange recently and having little to no energy and having weird feeling legs and after requesting a vitamin d test it turns out in fact while there is “nothing wrong with me” I have a vitamin d Deficiency and my level was 18 which apparently is extremely low, after taking the vitamin d I feel lots better, however after missing a few doses here and there feel rubbish again, the hospital and Dr prescribed Vit D but online it says you must take with K2 and magnesium, for some strange reason I cannot tolerate magnesium and it makes me feel all tingly and strange and then when I stop taking even more fatigued, I don’t smoke I drink only on the weekend and I walk everyday, at this point I am just venting, I guess my question is why do I feel weird, like my bones are poisoned and strange feeling like a horrible feeling throughout the body that is not always present, I’ve been years without the feeling but whenever I am feeling like this it returns, feels bad man! Anyway am big fan of your vids not just here to tell about my own feelings
